Mystery -
Whether in movies or books mystery stories are my favorite. Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot come alive on the pages of Agatha Christie stories. Jessica Fletcher solves murders in an hour on “Murder, She Wrote.” Both come to an end when the main character through human reasoning reveals the culprit. We breathe deep with a sigh of certainty that good and right have prevailed.
There is one mystery that is unsolvable - God. No matter how hard I have tried, He doesn’t fit into my box of understanding. My reasoning, expectations, desires and judgments have limited a limitless God. If the universe continues to expand and there are more stars than grains of sand on all the beaches of the earth, how can God ever be limited to a puzzle to be solved?
“But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory" (1 Corinthians 2:7).
The Greek word “mustérion” from which "mystery" is derived also means "sacred secret," indicating something known only by divine disclosure or revelation.
I’ve wondered can I make God too good, too loving, too kind, too merciful . . . ? Instead of an answer, more questions come to mind. Do I even understand a love that expects no return? Can I wrap my mind around the words, “Father forgive them. . .” when no one had even asked? What do I do with a judgmental, unforgiving son being told by his father, “All that I have is yours.”?
If this quandary is not enough, along comes quantum science! What tiny bit of quantum mechanics I understand blows up any ideas about limiting God in any way, shape or form! The mystery deepens and there seems to be an invitation to join Him in the infinite world of possibilities.
I was told growing up, I asked too many questions. Not with God! He invites us to ask, to seek, to knock. He desires us to know Him, to taste and see how good He is. The more we see, the more we will see. The more that is revealed, more will be revealed. Endless and boundless!
“Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen." (Ephesians 3:20-21).
God is not a mystery to be solved but an adventure to embrace! Join me and prepare to be astounded.
