So they are no longer two, but one flesh.......
Genesis 2:23-25 says: The man said, "This is now bone of my bone, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman' for out of man she was taken." For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked, and they were not ashamed.
In Matthew 19:1-12, the Pharisees ask Jesus about divorce. In Matthew 19:6, Jesus says: "So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."
Genesis 2:23-25 is a picture of intimacy, connection, and oneness. What if this is also speaking about how Jesus left His Father to become one (joined, united to) humanity that had been made in His image? So, for Jesus, becoming one flesh was to become human, revealing the eternal marriage we have in and to Him and the deeply, intimate love and union of I AM within the Trinity and also with, in, and to us.
Some questions that arise about Jesus' response in Matthew 19:6:
-What if there is a deeper meaning beyond how it's been widely interpreted, is not about the morality or spiritual lawfulness of divorce, and is not about weaponizing a requirement to stay married?
-What if Jesus is saying, "What I have joined together -- humanity and God -- let humanity not see as separate, and not bring a separation theology into this. Let humanity not hate their bodies that make them human and not try to separate the body by considering it evil, bad, or less than. Let humanity not bring hierarchies and division that cause separation. I have made the two (humanity and the divine) one. Let humanity not live as if and not believe they are separate from Me, themselves, one another, and creation."?
-What if this is about both spiritual and physical oneness we have with, in, and to Him, the One who indwells us?
We hope Holy Spirit will use these insights and questions to lead you into a greater understanding of the love and goodness of God.
